As a voice actor in my 40’s who did not grow up with video games (outside dropping quarters into Galaga machines in arcades) I’m only really familiar with the modern versions I have had the privilege of working on – which are basically interactive animated features with lots of juicy dialogue. As such, like those shows on the history of television or film, PortsCenter gave me a fascinating glimpse into what came before modern video and it does so with a unique hook – namely how classic games were changed for each platform. This is indeed unique to video gaming, for example, a show that would try to contrast and compare how say Star Wars looked when it premiered on VHS vs. Betamax would be dull at best… “Ooooh look! 10 more lines of resolution, and wow, both video decks can show the movie in color on color T.V.’s!!” All in all, Portscenter is fast-paced, informative – from both a technical and historical point of view – and has a fun sensibility that reminded me a lot of all those BBC history docs with Terry Jones. In short, the show doesn’t suck and I hope they get to make more.

This…. this is Screenwipe isn’t it?
I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been inspired somewhat by Charlie Brooker’s work.

Funny, articulate and very very British, I like it.
